What Is the Law of Attraction and How Does It Really Work?
The concept of the "Law of Attraction" has been popularized in recent years, but its origins trace back to the early 20th century with groundbreaking authors like William Walker Atkinson. Atkinson, a lawyer, author, publisher, editor, and speaker , was one of the first to use the term in a book title with his 1906 work, Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World.

Defining the Law of Attraction
Simply put, the Law of Attraction is the idea that our thoughts create, or help to create, our reality. By changing your thoughts, you can change your life experience. This concept operates on two levels:
Common Sense Level: Thinking positive thoughts and adopting a positive outlook can lead to a more positive life experience, while negative thinking tends to result in a more negative life experience. What you focus on is an indicator of the experience you have.
Spiritual/Philosophical Level: Stemming from the New Thought philosophy of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries , this level suggests that since you are "made in Its image" of the one creative power (which Atkinson calls "The Absolute" ), the creative process of that power is available through your thoughts. New Thought teachers often assert that "thoughts are things" and possess creative power.
The Mechanics of Thought Attraction
According to this philosophy, every thought you think sends out vibrations—a manifestation of energy and force. These thought vibrations are described as being as real as the vibrations of light, heat, or sound, differing only in the rate of vibration.
The Law of Attraction is not just about personal influence; it has a magnet-like drawing power. This is how it really works:
Like Attracts Like: Your thought-waves attract to you the thoughts of others, and also things, circumstances, people, and "luck," all in accord with the character of the thought uppermost in your mind. For instance, thoughts of love attract love , while thoughts of anger, hate, or envy attract the foul results of kindred thoughts from others.
Creating Your Surroundings: You are constantly sending out thoughts of varying intensity and reaping the results. The person who is filled with love sees love everywhere. Ultimately, we make our own surroundings.
The Power of Expectation and Belief: Strong belief is considered as effective as a strong wish. A successful person believes in their success, thereby setting into operation the strongest forces in the thought world. Similarly, the one who fears a thing unconsciously expects the feared outcome, and the Law of Attraction works with that fear just as it would with a positive desire.
Key Concepts for Application
To harness this power, Atkinson and other teachers stress several key concepts:
Eliminate Fear and Worry: Fear is the parent of negative emotions like worry, hate, and failure, and it paralyzes desire. Worry never helps one accomplish anything; it is negative and blocks attainment. The best way to overcome fear is to assume the mental attitude of courage, thinking and acting courage until it becomes your dominant mental attitude. You can transmute worry into strong desire and interest to succeed.
The Power of Desire: To attract something, you must want it very much. The stronger the desire—or "ruling passion"—the greater the force set into motion. This desire, combined with confidence and will, is the key to attainment. You must "fall in love" with what you want, giving it your most earnest thought so that your mind works on the subconscious plane to bring forth ideas and plans to help you.
The Will and Auto-Suggestion: Everyone has a strong will, but the mind needs to be trained to use it. Auto-suggestion—the deliberate use of specific thoughts to plant seeds into the creative subconscious mind—is the secret to developing the mind as an efficient instrument of the Will. Repeating an earnest affirmation, such as "I Am Using My Will Power" or "I Am Asserting the Mastery of My Real Self" , helps establish new mental attitudes and raises your mental vibration to receive positive thought-waves.
Courage and Confidence: The person who confidently says, "I Can and I Will" is a mighty magnet, attracting all that is needed for their success. By adopting the "I Can and I Will" mental attitude, you bring to the surface dormant, positive qualities within yourself and attract external help.
By consciously setting your mind to the vibration of courage, confidence, strength, and success , you get in the current of the Law of Attraction and begin to see positive results.
